Birthday Month Shuffle - 7th Edition Day 26

This song is essentially a love song, but I think it is especially poignant given my mother's death now almost 4 months ago.  Can it really have been that long when it still seems like just yesterday?  I can't say that I have moments when I don't remember that she's dead, more like moments when I am reminded that she's dead.  Does that even make sense?  I don't know, it's been a crazy several months.

Regardless, this song is about love and lost and remembrance.. and those special people in our lives who make a difference and how they'll always be with us...

Birthday Month Shuffle - 7th Edition Day 18

What are the movies that you can watch over and over and never get tired of watching?  “50 First Dates” is one of those movies for me.  I don’t care if I come in at the beginning, the middle or almost the end, I’ll sit and watch it.  I still laugh at the steroid jokes.  I still laugh at how crazy Rob Schneider is as Ula.  I laugh and I laugh.

I recently added the soundtrack to my iPod and today “I Melt With You” cover by Jason Mraz is the song.  I’ll include it and the original.  I like Mraz’s version because of the tropical feel.  What do you think?

Music has always been an important part of my life.
I can't remember a time when I didn't have one song or other playing

As I get older, certain songs begin to hold more meaning.
Kinda like the song "I Lived" by One Republic.

My trip with my mother to Alaska was all about enjoying as much time as we
could together because she was dying of kidney failure.
It also was trying to fit in all the National Parks I could
and enjoying the splendor of Alaska.

That trip was on par with a road trip my husband and I did to Big Sky..
and we also managed to see multiple National Parks along the way.

I love musical theatre.

And, you know that there is always that one song

that gets the audience moving...

In "Grease" I think this is the one...

As I've mentioned before, I find a lot of my music from movies and TV shows.  This one is from the movie "Spy."  It's fresh, it's upbeat, it's fun to ride to... enjoy!

Great song, bad movie.

Who remembers the Kevin Costner "Robin Hood?"

I do.  And, for me, he wasn't the most memorable part.

I enjoyed Morgan Freeman as the Moor and his being asked

by a young child if he was "painted."

I loved Alan Rickman as the Sheriff of Nottingham

fresh off his bad-guyness in "Die Hard."

And I liked this song.

Not so much that I play it very often,

but when I do I think of new romance

just starting with a fervor.

Of course, this is my favorite "Robin Hood" movie,

which was made as a spoof of the Kevin Costner one;

especially the line at the end of the trailer...

"Unlike some other Robin Hoods, I can speak with an English accent..."

There are SO many things I can say about this song.

The song came out in 1985.

High school graduation and starting college.

Meeting UL 2 (unrequited love) who would later cause a lot of heartache

and hardship over the next three years.

This was the first of many I consider "his songs."

And, this one is so fitting because there were a LOT

of games played, and a LOT of mistakes made

on both sides.  I really wish I could go back and tell

18 year old me not to do it.

Don't fall in love.

But I did, and years later this song

still reminds me of a time in my life when I

thought I could have anything I wanted...

Boy, was I wrong.

I thought I would share this version of the song as well.

It came out in an episode of "Grey's Anatomy" and

I downloaded it to my iPod.

by Simple Minds is my #1 played song.

It's my go-to song for everything...

MyPod Birthday Shuffle IV - Day 3 - American Woman

I love, love, loved the Austin Powers' movies.  So much so, that my friends and I in med school went to the opening night midnight screening of the last one just to be the first to see it.  C and I drove his partner crazy just before leaving the house as we watched, and word for word quoted the prior two just to get in the mood.  We then laughed and applauded during the opening sequence of the new one, it was so awesome...



This song first came out in 1970 by the Guess Who, but became popular again in 1999 when Lenny Kravitz did his version.  I like the original and have it on my iPod.  Here's the song as I first heard it while watching "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me."

Day 21 - Road Tunes...

I drove to Sacramento today to start a ten day run of shifts in two of the local ED's here.  I've been making the same drive over the last 10 months, and it looks like I'll be doing this over the next year.

It's about a 5 1/2 hour drive, and I carry my trusty iPod and iPad with me to play plenty of music since there are several hundred miles of hills and forests with no radio signal.  Well, no decent music radio signal.

I've written before about my eclectic taste in music.  In fact, every year during my birthday month for the last several years, I write a post a day based on taking a spin on the old iPod wheel.

I dated a guy who would sneak into other theatre rooms just to see this opening sequence...

But, that's not my song for today... this is...

Val Kilmer... Yummy... 

This takes me back to the summer between my senior year in high school 

and the start of my freshman year in college...

Later on, I would be a surgical resident where "playing with the boys" took on a whole new meaning and pushed my competitive nature to a whole other level.

Love the song, love the video, sort of liked the movie... 

and, this is one of the very first soundtracks I bought on CD...

remember those marvelous flat discs that replaced tapes??

Luck be a Lady - Frank Sinatra

For some reason I remember this song more for this movie... Skip ahead to about 5:30 for the "Luck be a Lady" section, although the whole thing is pretty funny.

I always think of this as my theme song when heading with my mom for a gambling weekend. I have a few Frank Sinatra songs on my iPod. Again, love singing out loud to them. I think I like singing along with most of my music... hmm...

I Hate Everyone - Get Set Go



I love Grey's Anatomy.  Or, I should say, I used to love Grey's Anatomy.  Mostly it was the medicine and remembering how it was to be a surgery resident.  A lot of competition, a lot of late nights and hard work, and a lot of camaraderie.  The drama and romances... well, at least not in my residency program.

This song is sometimes the theme music for my day.  I work in an Emergency Department, and there are days when I do hate everyone.  The physician's desk is near the triage window, so I get a "preview of coming attractions" throughout the day.  Sometimes, the presenting complaints just make me cringe and wish I'd gone into something else... back to surgery perhaps...?

Patients that drive me the most crazy:
 - multiple medical problem patients that don't stop smoking, don't stop drinking, forget to fill their medications on time and come in because they're on the verge of collapse.  They get admitted, all of their medical problems readjusted, sent out with scripts and follow-ups and then come back several weeks later to do it all over again.
 - dental pain.  Your teeth are bad, you continue to smoke, you'd rather spend money on meth than a toothbrush and a dentist.  And, they always seem to come in on Friday or Saturday nights or at six in the morning... funny about that...
 - as seen on WebMD.  Stop looking up differentials on your smart phone and arguing with me about diagnosis and treatment.
 - repeat customers.  I know you're a drunk, everyone in town knows you're a drunk.  Sit in the middle of your room away from stairs, porches, your cat, chairs, ladders, and car doors and maybe you won't fall down three nights in a row needing to call 911 and getting so much radiation you glow.  If the liver cirrhosis doesn't get you, cancer from all of the scans and films we've had to do just might.
 - rashes... I just don't like them...

I love "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," and I know I have written about it before.  This song is just musician's having fun, and it's been used widely in movies and commercials.  I'll always remember it from the "Ferris Bueller" movie.  The Ferrari scene for sure, but also for the ending.  It's probably one of the first movie endings I remember being told to actually watch until the end of the credits. And, I did. And, I enjoyed...!
This is another one of those songs that didn't appear in the soundtrack and which I had to track down to add it to my collection. Again, thank you Napster...
