MyPod Birthday Shuffle IV - Day 15 - (You Want to) Make A Memory

From time to time, I think everyone hears a song on the radio
which makes you stop and think about "what might have been."

This song does that for me.
Two friends getting together for whatever reason.
Obviously comfortable with each other.
Some would say being with an ex after a long time.
I've never had an ex.  Funny, huh...?
I had a lot of relationships, but no exes.
Seems I just moved on from one relationship
to the next.

Sure I had a first love, and those unrequited loves
I've written about before.
But, no exes.
No stalker who calls friends to see where I am.
No worrying about where I went out to because I
"didn't want to run into him and his new girlfriend."
No awkward meeting with his family members.

Anyway.
Although  I am happily married,
I do think about some of the people I dated
or almost dated
or wish I would have dated....
And this song reminds me of them,
and what might have been....

MyPod Birthday Month #9 - I Drove All Night

Spring/Summer 1996 I was a pre-med, post-baccalaureate student trying to get into medical school. I was working 3 jobs and carrying a full science course load. There was very little time for socializing. I did have one good male friend in my classes. He was a non-traditional student as well. We did manage to sneak in some homemade dinners after studying, and did go out once or twice for drinks. We were never more than friends making our way through some challenging times. Although this song originally came out in 1989, it wasn't until that year that I heard it... and it made me wonder about the possibilities for something more. That never came to pass, but I can never hear this song without thinking on those lean times, and my friend, and the possibilities for romance in the midst of struggling to reach a goal.

myPod Shuffle #8 - Iris

Did you ever watch the movie "City of Angels?" It's a film about an angel who falls in love with a person and gives up Heaven to be human along with them. It made me think at the time (April of 1998) what would I be willing to give up for love?

I was four months away from starting my first year of medical school, and I hadn't really been in a relationship with any sort of longevity for a while.  I had spent the last three years working 7 days a week at two jobs plus carrying a full load of pre-med courses.  Just having a study buddy was hard enough.  Not to mention, it's hard having a relationship when your classmates are almost 10 years younger than you.

I did have Pre-Med Buddy (PMB) who I'd occasionally meet for dinner and study group that was a "non-traditional" student like myself.  We were in a lot of the same classes and had the same world views given our ages.  So, it was nice to have someone to relate to.   But, not quite "Iris" material.

There were Online Friend 1 and OF2, both of which were fun to go out with and chat with, but somehow the chemistry wasn't there or the timing wasn't right either.  I did ask OF2 jokingly to "wait for me" at one of our last dinners before leaving for med school, but our friendship never went beyond that.  Still, no "Iris" material.

I didn't know at the time that the song and movie came out that I would meet my DH just about three months later and suddenly be able to relate to a lot of the song.  Over the course of the next 7 years while I struggled through medical school and a surgical internship, I understood the depths of what one is willing to give up for love.  It was the first time I started to consider someone else's future when making plans for my own.  Now, that's "Iris" material.

NaBloPoMo Day 18

"Oh, I don't drive. I keep taking the test over and over again, but, I'm all, this is hard."

That's kind of how I felt after taking my board exam today... "but, I'm all, this is hard." That line kept me laughing for a while. Hopefully, I will find out in 90 days that I don't have to take this test over and over again... once was enough...!

For fun, I will share with you my test taking anthem... A good friend and I were working our way through med school prerequisites. We were both "non-traditional students" a good many years older than most of our classmates, so we supported each others' decision to go through it all over again. One of our most challenging classes was Organic Chemistry. We sat across from each other in class, and our ritual before every test was to tell each other, "Hakuna Matata." No worries.

We both made it through premed. We both made it through medical school. Now years later I still think of those times... struggling with every exam... working three jobs to pay for school... sweating out the MCATs.... wow... wonder where my friend is now...?

Enjoy!
