Birthday Month Shuffle - 7th Edition Day 18

What are the movies that you can watch over and over and never get tired of watching?  “50 First Dates” is one of those movies for me.  I don’t care if I come in at the beginning, the middle or almost the end, I’ll sit and watch it.  I still laugh at the steroid jokes.  I still laugh at how crazy Rob Schneider is as Ula.  I laugh and I laugh.

I recently added the soundtrack to my iPod and today “I Melt With You” cover by Jason Mraz is the song.  I’ll include it and the original.  I like Mraz’s version because of the tropical feel.  What do you think?

M is for Movies

I've written many times about how much I love movies.  As a kid, they were an escape; a view into a life so different from my own.  As I grew older, they were inspiration; a way of seeing how I could and would later change my life.  As a young adult, they were a way to make time pass.  If I knew I had to be ready in 90 minutes, I would put on a 90 minute movie.  The time would pass, and I would know when it was time to be doing whatever came next.  During med school and residency training, they went back to being an escape.

Now they are a little bit of everything: they help pass the time, they help to inspire, and they are a means of escape.  Here are a few screenshots of my favorites.... can you name them all?  What are your favorites?

November Notes, Day 27

"After Dinner Conversations"

I hope you had a great Thanksgiving.  I went to a colleague's home for Thanksgiving given that I am away from home working in Sacramento for the holiday.  Her family was very nice, and we had a great time eating and drinking.  What I love best, though, are the after dinner conversations.

As physicians, and especially as ED physicians, we get asked all the time about TV shows and how close to reality are they.  We all laughed and shared experiences from our medical school and training and how there are some things you're only going to see on TV... such as that episode on "Grey's Anatomy" where they wear adult incontinence undergarments to surgery so that they don't have to step out and miss something.  This is something my surgical fellow residents and I never even considered.  You ate and drank to a certain schedule, and you made sure your bladder was empty prior to going into the OR.  Even bowel habits became regimented.

We also talked about current politics touching on the Belgium Crisis and cat memes, the refugee crisis and friends that are helping and their stories, and the legalization of marijuana in California and the problem with "trimigrants."  

There were the usual discussions about favorite TV shows, the benefits of Hulu and Roku versus satellite or cable.  What shows were currently available on Netflix and what recent movies were better than others.  We discussed music.  We touched on some decorating tips.  And, we had some nice discussions about travel and places we'd been and where we'd like to go next.

I could have talked all night...   

November Notes, Day 20

"The Calm After the Storm"

Today was that weird kind of day where all of a sudden there was nothing to do.  I'm back in Sacramento for a week, and our annual party is over, all the work on the house has stopped for a few weeks, and it's that strange kind of let down when you've been running full blast for what seems like weeks and weeks, and the stress is finally over.

I remember experiencing the same thing in medical school.  You'd have weeks of classwork, then weeks of endless nights preparing for midterms, then a solid week of exams with no rest except to grab something to eat to get back to studying... then Friday would come.  Your exams would be over by around noon, and suddenly you were free with NOTHING TO DO.  You didn't feel the need to rush to get back to the books... that was for Sunday night.  And for just a few hours you could relish in the now.

That's kinda how today felt once I finished all the things I needed to do.  I walked outside and stood in the sunshine, feeling the slight breeze, and just enjoyed being in the moment.  Tomorrow it's back to the rush of the ED for a full 5 days in a row, but today was just a chance to recharge and renew.

Birthday Shuffle Year V - Day 22 - I Hope I Get It

While this isn't the music from "A Chorus Line" the movie... I think you get the idea...


I've written before that I love musicals.  And this is one of my favorites.  It's a story about dancers trying to reach their dreams.  Which is probably why I have liked "So You Think You Can Dance" for the last 10 years.  Again, people working hard to reach their dreams.

Not to make a political commentary, but as I have been watching the Tour de France and watching SYTYCD this summer, I think sports and dance are the only places left where people who work hard get rewarded for their effort and not just for showing up.  There's no free ride.  If you don't put in the time, you don't have a chance to win the prize.

Ok, and off the soapbox.  What's your favorite musical?

Birthday Shuffle Year V - Day 15 - Low

Another one of those dance-until-my-feet-fall-off songs. I loved the beat from the first time I heard it, and then I heard the lyrics. Just a fun dance song all around. I then saw it in the movie "Step Up 2 the Streets" and I think that made me like it even more...

   

 I wrote about it in another post about dancing it out.  And, that's what it's really all about... taking the time to work off a little stress, have a little fun, and just recharge your batteries so you can get set to get the job done. That's why it's on my dance list favorites and on my cycling audio list. 

 And, why it should be on yours too...!

It's funny to be writing about Florida when I'm

vacationing here in Montana.

But, that's the song that came up today in the shuffle.

"Key Largo" by Bertie Higgins

came out in 1981.

It was a one-hit wonder for Higgins,

but I mostly remember it as a love song

which hit just about the time I was starting high school.

I didn't have a boyfriend at that point,

but my attachment to love songs

started about that time.

Besides, who doesn't love a song

which references two great Bogart movies?

"Casablanca" and "Key Largo."

Who remembers the Kevin Costner "Robin Hood?"

I do.  And, for me, he wasn't the most memorable part.

I enjoyed Morgan Freeman as the Moor and his being asked

by a young child if he was "painted."

I loved Alan Rickman as the Sheriff of Nottingham

fresh off his bad-guyness in "Die Hard."

And I liked this song.

Not so much that I play it very often,

but when I do I think of new romance

just starting with a fervor.

Of course, this is my favorite "Robin Hood" movie,

which was made as a spoof of the Kevin Costner one;

especially the line at the end of the trailer...

MyPod Birthday Shuffle IV - Day 3 - American Woman

I love, love, loved the Austin Powers' movies.  So much so, that my friends and I in med school went to the opening night midnight screening of the last one just to be the first to see it.  C and I drove his partner crazy just before leaving the house as we watched, and word for word quoted the prior two just to get in the mood.  We then laughed and applauded during the opening sequence of the new one, it was so awesome...



This song first came out in 1970 by the Guess Who, but became popular again in 1999 when Lenny Kravitz did his version.  I like the original and have it on my iPod.  Here's the song as I first heard it while watching "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me."

#1579 - On Yoda

My good friend M and I are huge Star Wars fans.  Aside from seeing the originals, we went to the theatre to see the "enhanced" versions when they came out.  Unfortunately, I was in med school when the "prequel" trilogy came out, so we weren't able to go see those together, but we have a date for December 18th, 2015 to go see the first of the new "sequel" trilogy.

If you know anything about Star Wars, you know that Yoda figures prominently in the series.  And I love this meme that has been circulating recently...

Of course the most famous of Yoda quotes is the:  Do.  Or do not.  There is no try.

But do you remember these...?

Day 24 - Seeing is Believing Even More

I love reading, and I love watching movies.

Kismet is when what I've read comes to life on the big screen,

or on the little screen.

I'm working in Sacramento this week, and so I have a lot

more free time to read.

Did you know that the TV show "Dexter" was from a book?

I didn't, and this week I am reading "Darkly, Dreaming Dexter."

It's awesome, and having seen the first couple of seasons of the series

I can almost imagine Michael C. Hall reading it to me.

But, that's just one of the voices in my head.

Other stories/books I've loved on the big/or small screen:

The Hunger Games (so far.  I'll go see "Catching Fire" this week.)

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (I like the original Swedish version better.)

Shawshank Redemption (I still cringe during parts.)

Day 21 - Road Tunes...

I drove to Sacramento today to start a ten day run of shifts in two of the local ED's here.  I've been making the same drive over the last 10 months, and it looks like I'll be doing this over the next year.

It's about a 5 1/2 hour drive, and I carry my trusty iPod and iPad with me to play plenty of music since there are several hundred miles of hills and forests with no radio signal.  Well, no decent music radio signal.

I've written before about my eclectic taste in music.  In fact, every year during my birthday month for the last several years, I write a post a day based on taking a spin on the old iPod wheel.

Day 5 - As You Wish

I love the movie (and the book) "The Princess Bride."  

If you've lived a cave for the better part of your life

and haven't heard of this movie (and book by William Goldman)

it's about a grandfather who comes and reads

a book to his grandson who is sick.

The story is about the "true love" between

Wesley and Buttercup.

There's giants, and swordfights, and miracles.

And, there's the classic line:

"Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya.

You killed my father.

Prepare to die."

I recently had a chance to visit the EMP Museum in Seattle, Washington,

and they had on display the famous sword.

And, the glove of the "six-fingered man."

I was a little disappointed to see what looked like

electrical tape on the handle...

I'm sure you don't find any of that in Florin...

MyPod Birthday Month #18 - Baby Mine

Like I've said before,

I have a very eclectic collection of music on my iPod.

"Dumbo" is one of the first movies I remember seeing growing up.

This version of the song by Bette Midler was in the movie "Beaches"

which I seriously saw over and over.

I like this blend of the two...
